Smith: Ignite Mips helmet

It’s always interesting to look outside the bike industry for accessories and apparel. Smith, with roots in the ski fields, is making bike helmets with some of the most compelling safety features in the market.

The Ignite Mips – the company’s aero offering – is finally available in Australia after passing this country’s rigorous safety protocols. As the name suggests, it comes with the almost ubiquitous Mips safety system and, for additional and possibly
more comprehensive coverage, its Koroyd impact protection material. Koroyd is a honeycomb-type structure that Smith says absorbs crashes better than foam and has added ventilation benefits.

Cyclist found the Ignite to be more comfortable and lightweight than you’d typically expect of an aero helmet. There was a clear flow of air from the front ventilation holes to those at the tail of the helmet, and the fastening system, although uncomplicated, kept the helmet steady to the point we forgot we were wearing it.
