Velothon 2018, Stage 2: A Sprinter’s Delight

A sprinter’s delight, the fast and flat stages are predictable but as always there’s room for surprises. As the saying goes for stages like today: you can’t win the race but you can lose it.

In 2017 Velothon launched their world series and the Sunshine Coast featured as Australia’s inaugural entry. As any of the three-day riders would testify it was an event to remember, so much so Velothon is returning to Maroochydore on their six stop world tour from 20 – 22 July 2018.

Velothon Sunshine Coast Stage 2

Moffat Beach lies just north of Caloundra, the route goes west, inland then south towards Beerwah, on first appearances the profile is jarring but on a closer look the maximum elevation will soothe weary legs. Don’t dispel concerns for complacency though, the sprinters and race favourites are sure to keep the pace high. Once the first feed station has been reached the route traverses the hinterland back north.

The KOM appears on the second of a series of five small climbs, including the finale, a 1km Sprint sector on the uphill finish. Though these climbs may be relatively small for those who are feeling their effects, make full use of the ‘Recovery Hour’ at the clubhouse as today was nothing compared to what’s in store tomorrow on Stage 3.
