The latest addition to Met’s helmet line-up isn’t trying to win any awards for lightness or aerodynamics, but the Estro Mips does squeeze some impressively high-quality features into a very reasonably priced package.
The most obvious addition is the Mips slip liner – the yellow plastic insert found on many new helmets, which helps reduce the impact of rotational forces on the skull in the event of a crash – however the focus of the newly designed Estro is on comfort. The 360° head belt of the Safe-T Upsilon retention system ensures there are no pressure points, even on less-than-perfect head shapes (try not to stare), and the 26 vents help to keep the rider cool when the temperature rises.
At 270g for a size medium it’s about 20g heavier than the Rivale Mips – Met’s mid-range all-rounder – but comes at around $40 cheaper. When you consider that 20g is about the equivalent of three grapes, that seems like a reasonable payoff, especially for a lid that Met claims is a match in terms of comfort and safety for any of its top-end models.
