It’s pains us to say (as born and bred Sydneysiders) but Melbourne and Victoria in general, is the home of gravel riding. Gravel Grit You Yangs brings all the very best parts of gravel riding to a part of the world frothing for adventure. Melbourne, Geelong and Victoria, you’re welcome.

Last year we launched Gravel Grit in our backyard. A touch under two hours drive from Sydney and riders found themselves at the start of a brand new event and arguably the first real gravel outing to arrive in New South Wales. The 300-plus ‘bunch’ climbed high into the local state forest and enjoyed views over to the ocean and of the valleys below. What came up, always goes down and what better way to cap off a challenging day on the dirt than with a roaring decent.

Refreshed, refuelled, bikes washed and riders were home before dark. Those who came (and even those who couldn’t make it) loved the format and so here we are, Gravel Grit has arrived to Melbourne – almost. Gravel Grit You Yangs, situated in the gravel and mountain bike mecca of the You Yangs is the home for our latest off-piste event.

Partnered with Bicycle Network, Cyclist is proud to present a gravel ride worthy of the homeland of gravel riding in Australia. And in case you’re unsure what Gravel Grit is all about, you can see what Gravel Grit Laguna (NSW) has in store and even check out the ride from last year. We guarantee you’ll have a blast.

It’s a good year to be living in Victoria because this time, Gravel Grit You Yangs comes before Laguna – you might just find yourself booking a flight to Sydney afterwards. Pencil (or pen) the date, Saturday, 1 September and get yourself primed for a cracking day along the roads less ridden.

The course options:

The Long Haul

Distance: 91km | Elevation: 1,100m
Starting from Little River, the long option travels through the Brisbane Ranges, Steiglitz Historic Park and the You Yangs Regional Park.

With steep pinches, sharp hairpins and technical descents the route is perfect for anyone with a sense of adventure who’s looking for a great day out on the bike.

Have a couple of extra weet-bix for breakfast because this ride guarantees plenty of ups and downs, some laughs, tears and a whole lot of fun!

The Teaser

Distance: 32km | Elevation: 496m
Perfect for novice and younger riders, ‘The teaser’ is a great introduction to off-road riding and to practice basic skills in a safe environment.

The ride heads into the You Yangs, passing by some of the stunning features the park is known for including; gum plantations, incredible rock formations and the iconic Bunjil Geoglyph.

The majority of the riding is on gravel roads with a sprinkling of single-track thrown in, suitable for riders with basic experience.
