From the editor,

By the time you read this, the Giro d’Italia will have finished and those with juice still in the tank will be getting the body steadily ready for Le Tour. Our profiled Italian Vincenzo Nibali, at time of writing, was circling his prey, and we’re putting money on it right now – with a week to go – that the Shark from Messina will add another maglia rosa to his palmarès. But Vincenzo’s path into cycling wasn’t all smooth pedalling – his dad once threatened (and actually went through with) chopping his bike in half. With the power of hindsight (and the www), it seems we didn’t quite get our podium predictions right but we’re excited to provide you with a compelling story about the Italian champion who now sets his sights on the Tour and a potential tilt at the Polka Dot jersey!

While Vicenzo’s particular bike may have been beyond salvage, we’re pretty sure a few others were heading to the repair shop after getting caught in the early chaos of the Granfondo Via del Sale. Our wild ride through the hills of Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region was unlike any sportive we’ve ridden – or should we say ‘raced ‘ – before. Jump onto the starting grid and get our full story available online.

In Oz, things are cooling down, and the winter months are the best time to head off the beaten path with a gravel bike. Unlike the road, where the chill makes early rides that little bit less appealing, off-road the speed drops – and so does the wind factor. Gravel Grit returns soon, so now is the perfect time to get those dirty kilometres into the legs. Or, for those with a more competitive spirit, why not try your hand at a local CX race? If you do, it’s likely you’ll run into one of the riders from the Maap-Enve squad. The three-person outfit doesn’t just look the part – it’s proving itself a true stayer in this niche area of the sport. Fiona Morris takes us behind the scenes of a team with its eye firmly on the long-term.

If ‘gravelleuring’ isn’t your thing just yet, we get it. It’s not for everyone. For you, our local Big Ride around Lake Eildon* and across the Goulburn River does its best to steer clear of the rough stuff – even if Nick Squillari did request to return again with slightly wider rubber-equipped machines. From the team here at Cyclist, we hope you enjoy!
