It’s still rare to see Bontrager branding, a subsidiary of Trek, on bikes besides their own. The Aeolus XXX wants to change that as it treads into the hotly contested wheelset market on its own merits. Bontrager’s newest build, offers uncompromised and unadulterated performance.
Aeolus, translates from Greek to ‘quick and nimble’ and in Greek Mythology was The Keeper of the Winds, aptly named to launch Bontrager’s performance rim for Trek’s line-up. Cyclist is told it too will be fabled for it’s ability to cut through the headwinds whilst keeping the crosswinds at bay, with a fresh profile to ensure stability regardless of its new lighter weight.
A few more grams are shaved off by scrapping the stickers and using laser-etched logos, the laser treatment continues on the braking surface, creating a textured Laser Control Track to ensure these rims can slow down as quick as they accelerate.
For even more stopping power there are disc brakes models, on top of the option of a Tubeless-ready (TLR) clincher and Tubular models. Holding the rubber down and incorporating the new shape is a 21mm internal rim width able to cater for wide treads and, fingers crossed, wild terrain.
Three model lines roll out ranging in rim depth and then further customised with tyre and brake preferences. If those options aren’t enough Bontrager have put Keith’s quote to the test with the competitively priced disc brake and tubeless Aeolus Pro 5, a few features short of the XXX range but arguably ‘strong, light, and cheap’.
