2018 FedUni Road Nats: Not just for the pros

A new name and new races, the 2018 FedUni National Road Nats include more events than ever before.

A change in naming rights and some tweaks to the professional and U23’s courses, it would be easy to overlook the amateurs. Some of the biggest changes to the 2018 FedUni Road Nats come to the spectator, community, and amateur divisions.

The race schedule will retain the Australian Gran Fondo National Championships, along with a Clubs Team Time Trial, and a National Club Teams Criterium Relay Championships. The most popular event, the Gran Fondo, takes place over five laps of the Mount Bunniyong road race course with fully closed roads. It’s as close to racing with the professionals without having to hold their wheel. For those not seeking medals or entry into the UCI Gran Fondo champs, there will be a three lap option too.

The newest addition is a Club Teams Criterium, held on Sturt Street’s 1.1 kilometre ‘hot dog’ street circuit right in the centre of Ballarat. The Club Team Relay will see teams of 3–4 riders completing a relay-style event of four laps per rider and 16 laps total as a team. The Wednesday race will take its place amongst the pro’s schedule and teams will be categorised by age. If you’re just there to spectate there’s the Let’s Ride Community Free Cycle, where the whole town gets a chance to test out the course before the Elite races get underway into the night.

The same age categories will exist in crowning the nation’s fastest club, teams of 3–4 can enter the time trial, completing the same distance and course as the pro’s. Although it may be open to amateurs, expect to see elite talent and equipment on the start line.

Whether you’re racing or spectating the new formats and events should prove a welcome change, and with some of the best racing taking place on the first day, it’s a good incentive to take in the full program. If you’re still looking for something else we heard Road Nats might be going off-road too, and if you’re just there to spectate read our preview of the professional races here.
