Nothing is more iconic than the red centre, but cycling doesn’t really come to mind, until now. The Redback has brought off-road stage racing to this breathtaking landscape.
Alice Springs, The Alice, a well-known iconic Australian town, a stop on the tourist route and home to eclectic locals, and now some of Australia’s newest single track mountain bike trails.
Rapid Ascent has taken full advantage of the trail network around Alice Springs, creating The Redback, a six-stage mountain bike race through the singletrack and surrounds of Mparntwe, as the region is known to the Arrernte, including the incredible McDonnell Ranges.
Held over four days, the six stages vary from fresh single track, 4WD trails and even a sealed bitumen hill climb. The days vary from 20-50km with a mix of longer cross country (XC) stages interspersed with a hill climb, a time trial, a night stage to keep things interesting and take full opportunity of those big starry desert skies.
To take advantage of the location and keep logistics simple the event hub and all stages depart and finish around Alice. For those not yet ready to test their fitness, stages can be entered individually without committing to the whole event. If it’s beginning to sound a little too much like a holiday, fear not Cyclist, is sending Thomas Treloar into the field. Our fearless rider will have no option but to race. Hopefully those post-race massages and beverages will work their magic.
For more details head to The Redback site and stay tuned for Thomas’ ride.
