Cyclist tried the roadies on for size, and were so impressed we wanted to get our soles a little dirtier with Bontrager’s XXX MTB shoes.

Bontrager’s XXX shoes are their ultimate offering. A pro-level shoe designed with and raced by the Trek team, their newest addition to the Triple X line is for the mountains. The design appears adapted from the road shoe, a tougher take loaded with mountain bike-specific features.

Starting at the base, Bontrager use full carbon for maximum stiffness, utilising Trek’s OCLV construction for the sole (yes, it’s the same initials spotted on their frames). It claims a stiffness of 14 out of 14, that’s equal to their road model and guaranteed to transfer power to the pedals without compromise. Out of the pedals, the moulded Tachyon lugs are designed to offer grip when off the bike.

Building from the stiff base is a focus on comfort. The inForm Pro last offers an ergonomic fit, which can be fine-tuned further with Bontrager’s InForm BioDynamic insoles, for a range of feet shapes and arches.

Lock it in

Keeping the shoes on are dial adjusters. The bottom velcro strap is scrapped in favour of two BOA IP1 dials, to offer adjustment and control on comfort. The inside tongue wraps over adding extra security on the fit. An external heel cup helps lock everything into place.

The design borrowed from the road shoe includes their 360° perforation for breathability, which we discovered worked really for keeping things cool. Coupled with the 100% TPU upper it should dry quickly too.

The panels are beefed up, featuring a GnarGuard coating for extra toughness and protection. Keeping the precision cut seams, detailed stitching, and moulded panels looking a little shinier for longer and your toes a little safer too.

Pick one

Cyclist’s weight for an EU45 shoe was 350 grams, which is around the mark for a shoe packed with features. The retail price makes it a heavy hitter too. Strong, light, cheap… It’s definitely covered two of them.
